Sitting in the exact spot of its predecessor, the Cumberland Oval, Parramatta Stadium now has a capacity of 20,000 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Phillip in 1986.
The new stadium was built following Parramatta’s Rugby League team winning their Premiership in 1981. Amid the jubilation from the home fans, the grandstand of the Cumberland Oval was burnt to the ground. Work started on the new stadium in 1985 and was finished in time for the 1986 Rugby League season.
As well as hosting both Rugby League and Union, the venue also features football and has hosted concerts from Paul McCartney to Michael Jackson.
Parramatta stadium’s pitch was dug 3 metres into the ground, meaning that Tonga, Ireland and Samoa will face an intimidating atmosphere when they compete in the stadium’s host World Cup group matches.
