DVD Review: Rugby League's Boots, Balls 'n' Bellringers
No modern rugby league DVD is complete without the most dramatic play in the history of Super League, Chris Joynt’s last second try against Bradford in the play-offs, and “Rugby League’s Boots, Balls ‘n’ Bellringers” DVD is no different.

Presented by SKY Sports’ duo Eddie Hemmings and Mike “Stevo” Stephenson, “Boots, Balls ‘n’ Bellringers” delves in to years of Super League television coverage to find the good, the bad and the ugly.

It goes through the best solo artists, showing some of the great individual tries, including a young Leon Pryce racing 90 yards for a kick return try at Knowsley Road for Bradford against St Helens. There are some great team tries, including another one at Knowsley Road, this time for Wakefield’s Steve Snitch after an unbelievable sequence of offloading.

The DVD then goes on to show some of the gaffes of the past ten or so years, clips that you don’t often see. It also includes some clips from Challenge Cup finals from yesteryear. Although football videos showing gaffes are often seen on the market, it’s rare to see such footage from rugby league, a pleasing feature of this particular product.

Although seemingly painfully scripted at times, for the most part, the commentary from Eddie and Stevo is fairly decent, although some of the corny banter between the two is shamefully put on.

Many of the highlights are taken from SKY Sports’ coverage of the greatest game, but there are some clips that have been taken from BBC and other broadcasters. Unfortunately, Eddie and Stevo decided to do mock commentary over these clips, meaning you’ve got Martin Offiah pacing away against Leeds in the 1994 Challenge Cup Final to the sound of a somewhat subdued Eddie commentating, showing that he in facts knows what’s happening.

Compare that to the excitement of the “wide to West” score, and it’s painfully obvious that the commentary has been added afterwards. Surely a suitable voiceover would have been adequate?

But that’s not to take away from the overall content of the DVD. Such is the rarity of rugby league on DVD, that many of the releases are must buys for fans. This one fits in to that category, but look out for it in bargain bins every where I probably wouldn’t recommend paying full (£15.99) price for it. 6/10.
