Wilkes is a seasoned pro who has played mainly in the top two leagues. Originally started his career with Keighley, before moving to Sheffield and Huddersfield respectively. This then took him to pastures new at Leigh, before joining Cumbrian side Whitehaven, where he played excellently and consistently. This was noticed by Wigan, but he only managed to make six appearances for the Cherry and Whites before joining Widnes in the hunt for promotion from National League One. Wilkes did help them shortly with his powerful runs, and excellent offloading, however was part of the side that faltered at the final hurdle, despite scoring a try in the Grand Final. Jon Kear recognised the talent that Wilkes possesses and brought him to Belle Vue for the 2008 season.
