Local boy Cunningham will start his 14th year in the Saints team in 2008. After signing from Wigan St Judes, his junior club, in 1993, Cunningham went on to establish himself as not only the first choice hooker at St Helens, but one of the best hookers in the game. Throughout his career he has rejected moves to both the NRL and rugby union, choosing instead to play his entire professional career donning the Red Vee jersey.
A dynamic runner from dummy half, Cunningham revels in his ability to poach tries from short distances, which is had led to well over 150 tries in over 400 appearances for the club. It was recently revealed that St Helens would be unveiling a statue of Cunningham in St Helens town centre after a fans vote. The hooker beat off legendary opposition such as Alex Murphy and Tommy Van Vollenhoven to have this accolade bestowed upon him.
