Workington Town were put to the sword by a ruthless Whitehaven side at Derwent Park in today’s pre-season friendly, the visitors rattling up 48 points to Town’s nil.

Workington under the coaching of former ‘Haven boss Dave Rotheram were overwhelmed by their superior opponents with five first-half tries settling the game as a contest.

Not that Whitehaven relaxed after the half-time interval, five further tries ensuring a repeat of the opening forty minutes and sending the travelling supporters home with a smile on their faces.

The home side could have opened the scoring early on when a try was disallowed for not grounding the ball correctly, but instead Craig Calvert went over at the corner to open the ‘Haven account.

Derrie Eilbeck went over for the second try followed by John Lebbon with the third; both conversions were missed and the score stood at 12-0 in Whitehaven’s favour.

However, further tries from Chris Smith and Ade Adebisi were successfully converted, giving the visitors a 24-0 advantage at the half-time interval.

Whitehaven refused to let up after the restart, three quick tries from Lebbon, Mark Shackley and Scott Teare along with two goals opening up a 40-0 lead.

The rout was completed with two more tries from Spencer Miller and Rob Jackson bringing the total to 48 and completing a miserable 80 minutes for Workington Town.
