Hull KR 31-18 Wakefield

Hull KR 31-18 Wakefield
The Robins proved too strong for a injury ravaged Wakefield side, in front of over 9,000 at a windswept Craven Park.

Wakefield went into the game already missing several key players, and were down another two by the 3rd minute of the contest. Centre Ryan Atkins failed to complete the warm up, and the influential Brad Drew limped off after a big hit by Rovers loose forward Scott Murrell.

Rovers on the other hand, were relatively full strength apart from Vella and Cooke, and started the game in fine form. Michael Dobson was once again pulling the strings, and his sublime pass put Shaun Briscoe through on the 19th minute. The fullback beating his opposite number on the way over the line.

Wakefield with makeshift halfbacks Martin and Demetriou, struggled to find any good field position, and shortly after Rovers were in again for 2 more trys. Clint Newton running onto Scott Murrell's pass, and Murrell himself profiting from a Dobson kick. Dobson was on form with the boot throughout, kicking 5 from 5 and adding a drop goal in the final minutes.

With the scores 18-0 to the home side, Rovers' Kris Welham and Scott Murrell got into a problem from the kick off and gifted possession to Wakefield. In the 37th minute Tony Martin shaped to kick, and put a fine cut out pass to Henderson to open the visitors account. Martin kicked the 2 points, making it 18-6 at half time.

Despite a good effort from a spirited Wildcats side, Rovers dominance continued in the 2nd period. Michael Dobson again in the heart of Rovers attack, found Liam Colbon with a long ball, Colbon had too much strength for Dave Halley and barged his way over in the corner.

On the 53rd minute, Ben Fisher extended the lead, with a fine solo try running out from dummy half. Dobson kicked the goal, making it 30-6, and game over for Wakefield.

Wakefield's effort was rewarded late on, with Ferguson and Gleeson both crossing the line, and at 30-18, the slim chance of a comeback was put out, when Michael Dobson slotted over a late field goal to make the final score 31-18.
