Crusaders open against champions Leeds

Crusaders open against champions Leeds

Champions Leeds will start their Super League XV campaign against Crusaders RL at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.

The season proper starts on Friday February 5th with the full first round of games, but the Rhinos tie with Brian Noble's Welsh side has been brought forward from Round 4 due to the World Club Challenge against Melbourne.

Harlequins, who will face Storm in a friendly leading up to the match, have brought forward their clash with Wakefield to the final week in January, which represents the earliest start ever to a Super League season.

The early start is attributed to England wanting longer to prepare for their Four Nations campaign Down Under in 2010.

Last season, the then Celtic Crusaders made their Super League debut against Leeds at Headingley.

New coach Noble faces an almost immediate return to former club Wigan, with the two sides facing off at the DW Stadium on the full opening weekend of the season. The SKY televised games in round one at Huddersfield against Bradford (Friday 5th) and St Helens against Hull (Saturday 6th).

Challenge Cup winners Warrington open up against Harlequins.

The Magic Weekend games are due to be drawn later today, taking place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd May at Murrayfield, the week before the Super League teams start their Challenge Cup campaigns.

The final round of games see Wigan take on Bradford and Hull host Leeds, while Crusaders finish with a home game against Hull KR.

North Wales Assembly Member Janet Ryder has described the new Rugby League season as a "new era" for sport in Wrexham after it was revealed that Crusaders will play defending champions Leeds Rhinos at the Racecourse Stadium in the first game of the new season in January.

The Plaid Cymru AM, who is also patron of the Welsh Rugby League and a passionate fan, said the move by Crusaders to play some of their Super League games in Wrexham's Racecourse Stadium was a fantastic opportunity for both the Crusaders and rugby league in the north of Wales.

Janet Ryder said: "To play the defending champions in the opening game of the new season on January 29 is quite a challenge for Crusaders and to have this taking place in the north of Wales will make it an extra special event. There is fantastic support for rugby league in the north and I'm sure Leeds will also bring good support as they have an average attendance of 17,000, so Wrexham will enjoy a bumper crowd.

"I think Crusaders will benefit from the move as well and I'm confident that it will benefit the grassroots development of sports through youth and community initiatives in the area. The Welsh Rugby League is working hard to promote the sport throughout Wales and to have such an attractive tie to open the new Super League season is a bonus. It's a new era for the sport in Wrexham and I'm sure Wrexham Football Club and the town as a whole will see the benefit."
