Celtic have announced that head coach John Dixon will leave the club after the final game of the current Super League season.

The Australian will return to his native Australia following Celtic's final league fixture against Castleford this weekend.

Dixon has so far been the only head coach at the Crusaders after being recruited to coach the new club in 2006. He led Celtic to promotion from the CHampionship 1 to the Championship and then as the club grew in stature and aimed for a Super League franchise, he led them to the Championship grand final in 2008.

Celtic were granted a franchise in Super League for the 2009 season and beyong although Celtic have since suffered from problems both on and off the field.

With just three wins under their belt all season, Celtic have struggled on the pitch, being on the end of sometimes cricket scorelines. Off the field, the "Visagate" scandal cost Dixon a number of overseas players and he was forced to play young Welsh talent, who hadn't quite risen to a level needed in Super League.

Dixon said: “I am disappointed to be leaving but I respect the chairman’s right to bring change. I would like to thank all the players, staff, and the very loyal band of supporters who I feel have all played integral roles in the successes that the club has achieved over the last four years.

 “I acknowledge that the first year in Super League has been difficult. I would like to wish the club every success in the future and I am pleased to state that the development structures are now in place that will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the club and rugby league in Wales.” 

An announcement about a new coach will be made in the near future.
