Chalmers: RFL uninterested in player welfare

New Zealand Rugby League chairman Andrew Chalmers has accused the Rugby Football League of having “little interest in player health and welfare”.
Chalmers’ accusations come after prop Adrian Morley was placed on report for a high tackle on Awen Guttenbeil but found to have no case to answer.
The three-man disciplinary panel that cleared Morley for Saturday’s Test match included an NZRL official and former Test match referee Neville Kesha.
Chalmers also said he was unhappy that another Morley tackle on Nigel Vagana was not even looked at, claiming that Kesha felt it was worth a four-to-six-month suspension.
The NZRL chairman said: "The RFL has little interest in player health and welfare."
"The one on Nigel wasn't even put forward for consideration, and Morley's effort was pushed under the carpet - despite Neville believing it was serious enough to warrant a suspension of between four and six weeks.”
Morley has a reputation for high and dangerous tackles in both Super League and the NRL as well as on the international stage, a fact picked up on by Chalmers.
"He was a repeat offender in his time in the NRL and he has a history of offending throughout his career in England,” continued Chalmers.
"The Kiwis have just come out of a Test match where Steve Matai was ordered off and then suspended for two games for a tackle on Australian Mark Gasnier.
"There were no questions asked - he was sent off and then handed a ban as well.
"Now the Kiwis come to the United Kingdom, and a player with a dreadful record for high tackles gets away unpunished.
Chalmers went on to say that the UK’s disciplinary regulations need reviewing, even suggesting that Morley should not feature in the Test series.
"This decision should be reviewed whatever the regulations are. The judicial system in place in this country is laughable if this is the way it works. Someone should have to answer for this.
"Morley should not be able to play in the first Test against the Kiwis on Saturday and there would be an argument that he shouldn't be able to appear in the next two Tests either.
"The referee did the right thing in putting the tackle on report, but the system has taken no regard of player welfare in the aftermath.
"Does that now give Morley carte blanche to go around aiming as high as he likes throughout this series? You'd have to think so."
The first Test between Great Britain and New Zealand is on Saturday night at Huddersfield’s Galpharm Stadium.
Meanwhile, New Zealand will hand debuts to back rower Epalahame Lauaki and full-back Sam Perrett in that game.
Lauaki will get a bench spot while Perrett will start alongside Wigan’s Thomas Leuluai and Bradford pair Shontayne Hape and Tame Tupou.
Leuluai will be playing at scrum-half alongside Lance Hohaia at stand-off.
