Gold Coast Titans have secured the services of another potential star of the future after re-signing exciting young prop Will Matthews.
The re-signing of Matthews, who will make his eagerly anticipated NRL debut for the Jetstar Titans against St George Illawarra at Skilled Park on Saturday night, will see him remain with the Gold Coast club until the end of the 2011 season.
The 20-year-old hails from Kyogle in the Gold Coast club’s catchment area of the Northern Rivers – the same breeding ground which has produced another of the club’s rising stars in Shannon Walker.
Matthews has been a key member of the Titans’ NYC under-20s side this season and last year helped feeder club Tweed Heads Seagulls on their way towards winning the Queensland Cup premiership at just 19 years of age.
Titans managing director Michael Searle said the re-signing of Matthews for a further three seasons was a major coup for the club.
“Will has shown to be a player of enormous potential,’’ said Searle.
“The fact he is about to make his NRL debut in arguably the toughest position on the field at just 20 years of age is testament to that.
“We believe Will has the chance to really cement himself as a mainstay of our forward pack over the next four seasons.’’
