Paul Cullen has resigned from the Head Coach position of Super League side Warrington Wolves following tonight's defeat to basement side Castleford Tigers.
Cullen quits after six years at the helm where he has taken the Wolves from a side near the bottom of the table to play-off contenders. He has in total spent over 25 years at the club both as a player and as a member of the coaching staff.
He moved to Warrington after being head coach at Cumbrian side Whitehaven. He took over from David Plange in 2002, leading them away from the relegation zone, and continued the progression into play-off contenders in the following seasons.
Unfortunately, he has failed to deliver a play-off challenging side this season, despite having some of the world's best players in Michael Monaghan and Matt King in his squad.
But tonight his fate was sealed when his side lost 36-28 to bottom club Castleford despite the Wolves holding a comfortable 28-14 lead at one point.
And following the match Cullen broke the news to the playing staff, stating: "That's it lads, I'm done."
He also told the Warrington Guardian: "I've no regrets and feel no bitterness.
"I'm sure the team will kick on from here."
His decision was preceded by a sit-in protest by the core part of the fanbase, at the Halliwell-Jones Stadium.
Warrington fan Jenny Gormley told the Warrington Guardian: "In a way I think it's sad because he did a lot for the club and I won't forget that.
"But in the end I think he stayed for too long.
The Wolves are expected to make a statement tomorrow.
