Danny Brough made the short journey from Castleford to Wakefield in the off season as he found the lure of a three year Super League contract too hard to resist. He still managed to guide the Tigers to Super League, winning the man of the match award in the National League 1 Grand Final.
James Gordon talks to the former Hull man:
Why did you make the decision to leave Castleford for Wakefield?
For stability mainly. I’ve got a young son and a fiancé and I wanted stability for them. I was offered a three year deal at Wakefield, and I just couldn’t say no to a Super League contract. I wasn’t willing to take the risk staying at Castleford and turning down Wakefield because in cup football anything can happen, and Castleford could have lost the Grand Final or in the play-offs and not have been promoted.
How have you settled in at Wakefield?
It feels like I’ve never been away. There’s a great set of lads ere and I’m enjoying. Pre-season has been tough but the lads have stuck together and made it really enjoyable.
What are your thoughts on the Super League franchise system?
I think it’s the right way to go, it’ll encourage more British players to come through the system, through the National Leagues and in to Super League. Coaches will feel more comfortable trying out the youngsters with the franchise system in place.
