Melling was the shining light of 2007 for Harlequins, and proved to be one of the best signings in Super League last year. Picked up from the fringes of the Wigan team, with whom he made 13 appearances in three seasons, not much was expected from Melling. However, he burst on to the scene covering injured full back Mark McLinden in the first part of the season, and made the position his own.
Melling had been signed as a back up hooker to Chad Randall, despite playing much of his rugby with Wigan in the back line, although he did play hooker for Wigan's Under 21 side in 2006. He left the JJB to pursue regular first team football, and has found that at Twickenham Stoop, with Harlequins now investing in young British talent like Melling.
He impressed so much in fact that new Great Britain coach Tony Smith chose him at full back for the mid season test match against France, in which the Lions won 42-14.
