Fanzone: Huddersfield

This week's fanzone profiles 18-year-old Huddersfield fan Claire Wortley.

Which team do you support and why?
Huddersfield Giants, because they are my hometown club and I have been raised up in a Rugby League family who have supported the Giants through the years.

How long have you supported them and can you remember your first game?
I started supporting the Giants as a 5 year old. But only went to big games such as Bradford Bulls. I started going religously back in 2004. I can remember watching the big games as a young girl and coming back disappointed because teams like Bradford simply crushed us!

What are your best and worst memories of supporting your team?
I'd say the worst memory supporting the Giants was in 2008. We hardly won any games and we were getting beaten by teams we should have beat. We only started turning round and becoming a better side after the departure of Jon Sharp. I'd say the best memory was the 2006 Challenge cup run, with beating Leeds in the semi final, that was easily one of the best games I've ever witnessed, which is the same with this year's semi final. Both times we have been tipped as the underdogs and we have shown that we are a better side than what people seem to think.

How is this season going in your opinion?
I think this is the best season I have seen the Giants play. Everything seems to be just right. The new coach Nathan Brown has done a really good job in turning this club and team around. I know a few people who thought he would struggle in his first season with us and the work he has done has proved them wrong. I think its amazing how far we have come from always finishing in the bottom 6 to now sitting comfortably in the top 4 spot and obviously in the Challenge cup final. So im really enjoying this season

What are your hopes for the future for your club?

I'm really hoping the Challenge Cup Final will help bring in some new supporters. The Club is in need of this as we haven't had good attendences through the years. Although this year we seem to be improving attendance wise!

What are your thoughts on the Super League licensing system?

I think it's a good idea because it expands the game to new areas of the country. I'm not really a fan of teams missing out, however I feel the teams who dont have their stadiums ready in time for the next franchise should be kicked out and other teams which are prepared for the franchise already such as Widnes should get a place.

What do you see for the future of rugby league?

I can see the franchise being extended to 16 teams instead of 14. I would also like to see extra tournaments like a State of Origin for the two main counties: Yorkshire and Lancashire, with the top players from each county to play against each other, just like the Australian Version. I also want to see an extended version of the World Club Challenge, instead of the Champions of NRL and SL playing against each other, it should be the top 3 English teams and the top 3 Australian teams to play against each other. This might bring in extra interest for rugby for both countries and could draw the attention of new fans of the game.
