Fanzone: Halifax

Fanzone: Halifax

Our fanzone feature quizzes fans from various clubs on their team, the season so far and their thoughts on all things rugby league.

This week we talk to Halifax fan Kaine Greenwood.

Which team do you support and why?
Halifax RLFC, it was all down to my godfather really, he felt I needed Sport in my life as neither of my parents have ever shown an interest in it (that doesn't mean they weren't subjected to the odd night of misery and cold at Thrum Hall though!).

Anyways back to the question, I can't remember the exact reason I fell in love with Rugby League maybe because more often than not it was a very, very cold evening/afternoon but somehow I was hooked and never looked back, 14 years on with more misery than magic it's still cold ha.

How long have you supported them and can you remember your first game?
I can't remember the exact game I had the pleasure of watching for the very first time but one thing I can remember is Halifax won. It was again a very, very cold evening and at to be honest I don't think I had a clue what was going to start with "why is he passing and why is he kicking it" I recall saying...the answer..."because he can" according to my godfather- I wasn't arguing!

What are your best and worst memories of supporting your team?
To be honest I enjoy every single game I see -win or lose- but in terms of the best moments watching Halifax I would have to say beating Leeds Rhinos at the Shay in 1998 I think it was, 42-0...or was it 48? To many tries to remember and far too long ago. As for the worst memory that is far more clear, although not during a match but afterwards. The retirement of Greg Florimo -a real heartbreaker for me- and certainly reduced me to a tear.

How is this season going in your opinion?
The season on the whole for has been a huge success, not just in terms of results but also the feeling around the club. For many years now there has been a feeling of inevitability when it comes to failure -not this year- after beating what I consider to be the best equipped side to be in this division numerous times and generally producing some exciting, well executed rugby the season has gone well so far...touch wood.

What are your hopes for the future for your club?
Obviously, I am hopeful we can claim our first piece of silverware for a long while in the not to distant future. The aim however has to be a successful licence application and to compete at the highest level of rugby league. Whatever happens though I am sure the club will always be in my heart.

What are your thoughts on the Super League licensing system?
What a question! We could be here all day going over this. In my view the system will improve the standard of the game in the short-term but I just can't see it working as a long-term strategy. It has as we have seen we Super League expanded the game geographically with the likes of Catalans and Celtic Crusaders -Toulouse being the National League example-, it as also in my view improved the standard of play and competition in all divisions and grades of the professional game. The problem I have is how we seem to be going away from the principle that the game is beneficial to all, I can quite easily see some sides within the league pyramid being left in wake of system over a long period because of it's tough demands on all areas of a club.

What do you see for the future of rugby league?
Rugby League I'm sure will live on for many a year to come with it's popularity increasing. It will, I'm equally as sure, have it's controversial and disappointing moments but we made it, we moulded it, we sure can mend it if needs be. Let's get tackling.
