Fanzone: Harlequins

Our fanzone feature quizzes fans from various clubs on their team, the season so far and their thoughts on all things rugby league.

This week we talk to 28-year-old Harlequins fan Steven Devonshire, who is from Twickenham in West London.

Which team do you support and why?
Harlequins. My PE teacher at the time was Dave Rotheram and he was the Alliance coach, myself and my Dad were offered some complimentary tickets and the passion for the then London Broncos was born.

How long have you supported them and can you remember your first game?
Since 1997, I don’t remember my first game but I do remember the Stoop, vastly different from how it looks now with the new stands. We always used to sit behind the goals and often bring food and arrive early to soak up the atmosphere.

What are your best and worst memories of supporting your team?
Best moment is probably reaching the 1999 Challenge Cup final at Wembley, but have had equally memorable moments throughout the years. I don’t have a worst moment, defeats are really difficult to take especially big defeats!

How is this season going in your opinion?
A little hot and cold, I’m hoping for a first ever home playoff and that we pick up some form starting. I’d also like to see some of hard working players get picked for the Dream team and Internationals towards the end of the year.

What are your hopes for the future for your club?

To become increasingly successful and push for a place in the top four of the table in the coming years.

What are your thoughts on the Super League licensing system?
I think it’s a good idea generally but very tough on the countless teams, and their supporters, that don’t make the grade. I’d be disappointed if Super League became a ‘closed shop’ in terms of team movement as I think the competition could become a little stale. I’m not sure what the licensing system will do to the competition in the long term, hopefully it’ll help develop youngsters and create a stronger competition but I think only time will tell.

What do you see for the future of rugby league?
Difficult to say really, I hope we don’t follow the NRL and adopt 2 referees as this won’t be able to be implemented at every level of the game due to the lack of referees in the first place, introducing a rule that can only be implemented at the highest level is surely not good for the game as a whole.

I’m not sure if the sport will ever become as high profile as people involved in the sport want it to be but I do think participation figures will continue to grow across the country and we might even see rugby league popping up in some unusual places in the UK!
