Weekly round-up

Weekly round-up

After the excitement of last weekend's Challenge Cup quarter-finals, the action returns to Super League this weekend, with yet more intriguing encounters set to shape the rest of the season.

Play-off hopefuls Castleford host Warrington, while the two surprise packages of the season Huddersfield and Hull KR clash at the Galpharm Stadium.

Hull host St Helens and will get a first look at one of their new signings, Saints star scrum half Sean Long. Long will be joined at the KC Stadium by Jordan Tansey and Craig Fitzgibbon next season, after the Sydney Roosters duo agreed deals with the club.

Bradford have also been busy in the transfer market, adding experienced Manly forward Glenn Hall to their squad for next season, while Harlequins have signed Widnes prop Sam Thompson on a month's loan.

Warrington pulled off a major coup this week, attracting former Wigan and Great Britain international winger Brian Carney back to rugby league. Carney, who started his rugby league career at Gateshead and Hull, has been playing rugby union for Munster and the Irish national team since walking out on his Gold Coast contract in 2007. He played in the NRL for Newcastle Knights in 2006.

The Northern Rail Cup reaches the quarter final stages with tonight's televised clash between Featherstone and Oldham at Leigh Sports Village. Widnes host York City Knights at the Stobart Stadium on Saturday. The Vikings, who won the competition in 2007, have suffered indifferent form in recent weeks, and stumbled through the group stage, which included a defeat at home to Oldham. York go in to the game having pushed Championship 1 leaders Dewsbury all the way last weekend.

Elsewhere, Barrow face Dewsbury and Leigh play Halifax with the prize a semi-final spot in the competition. The winners of the Northern Rail Cup will become eligible to apply for a Super League licence for 2012. Halifax go in to Sunday's game boosted by the news that coach Matt Calland has signed a new two year contract with the club, keeping him at The Shay until the end of 2011.

Last season's finalists Doncaster look set to enter administration after the club was hit by financial woes for the second time in as many years. They face a nine point deduction, and have already seen a mass exodus of players. Paul Handforth starred for Batley in their 40-34 win over Widnes at the weekend, while Ross Divorty this week joined Kyle Briggs at Featherstone. Michael Haley and Peter Green have moved to Sheffield, while Mark Castle is set to sign for Leigh. Former Hull KR and New Zealand Warriors back Andreas Bauer has signed for Barrow.

The Czech Rugby League inaugural championship gets underway this weekend, as the greatest game continues to spread its gospel. The Scandinavian Cup in Norway was won by the London Anzacs last weekend, and the tournament was deemed a great success.
