League in auction

A collection of rugby league memorabilia will form part of a charity auction at Colne Valley High School in Huddersfield next month.

The auction, to be held on June 28, is in aid of the Childrens Day Hospital at St James Hospital in Leeds. Each pupil at the school hand wrote a letter to a celebrity, and to date, the school has received more than 200 items to auction, including signed items from David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Andrew Flintoff.

The lot also features a game worn and signed Stuart Fielden Wigan shirt, as donated by the prop forward himself, two signed Huddersfield shirts and a signed Wakefield shirt.

Among the patients in the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Unit within the hospital is 13-year-old Joshua Goldspink, a Year 8 pupil at the school.

The unit, which caters for up to 200 patients per week, is one of the largest within the UK, and cares for children suffering from all types of paediatric malignancy including leukaemia, solid tumours and brain tumours. They also see a range of haematological cases including children with haemophilia and other bleed disorders.

The charity auction hopes to raise enough money to purchase new equipment for the unit.

The brainchild of the event, Steve Mowbray, a teacher at Colne Valley High, said: "I decided back in September last year that we needed to support a member of our school community, and wanted to foster a community ethos among fellow pupils by getting them to aid set it up. Each pupil hand wrote a letter to a celebrity or local business asking for an item to auction.

"I have been overwhelmed by the response from everyone, and some celebrities even took the time to write to the respective pupil personally thanking them for their request for items. We sent out around a thousand letters and to date we have received two hundred items, and several apologies."

The school will be producing a catalogue of items the week before the auction, and lots can be viewed on their website: http://www.cvhs.kirklees.sch.uk/donation.htm

He continued: "The volume and quality of the items has been fantastic, and I hope with as much publicity as possible; to raise a worthy sum for a worthy cause. The event has far exceeded my expectations, as I have received numerous offers of assistance and advice on how best to promote and run the event. The size and scale of the event has evolved massively, particularly as internet communications and offers of promotion have been received.

"Goodwill gestures such as your own, specialistauctions.com (have offered to list our items free of charge); and BBC Auctioneer Gary Don has given his time to conduct the auction on the day. I perceived back in September, that it would be me, a raffle and a few items from local businesses and local services.

"The pupils have been buzzing with the response as you can imagine, and hopefully the whole event will be a huge success in terms of raising funds for the Oncology Unit; at the Childrens Day Hospital."

The auction will begin at 11am on Sunday June 28, with lots available to view from 10am on that morning.

If you wish to donate any items to this auction to help Colne Valley High School, email rugbyleague@lasttackle.com and we will put you in touch.
