Magic success

Magic success

Nearly 60,000 fans enjoyed yet another superb spectacle as Super League's Magic Weekend rolled in to Edinburgh delivering seven superb games and an action packed two days of fun for the whole family.

An aggregate attendance of 59,749 watched the full round of Super League matches which were played at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh.

Nigel Wood, the RFL's Chief Executive, said: "Once again Rugby League fans have turned out in force to support their game and hopefully had a great weekend all round in the Scottish capital. I am sure they will have left a lasting impression on our hosts who have been extremely welcoming.

"Rugby League supporters are extremely passionate about their sport and they should be proud that very few sports could put on an event like this where 14 sets of supporters can mix together over one weekend whilst watching the sport they all love.

"The Magic Weekend is all about putting on a great showcase for supporters in a destination city and our partners in Scotland have been extremely supportive in putting on this great event enabling us to provide far more entertainment for the fans then ever before.

"Planning for next year's Magic Weekend in Edinburgh will start straight away and the starting point will be to seek feedback from clubs and supporters so that in 2010 this event is even bigger and better."

Scottish Rugby Chief Executive Gordon McKie praised the event's success and announced he was looking forward to welcoming back the 'Magic Weekend' to Murrayfield in 12 month's time.

McKie said: "We were extremely pleased to be able to host such a colourful and entertaining event with nearly 60,000 people enjoying the Scottish sunshine and a memorable weekend of Rugby League.

"We consider Murrayfield to be a premier European venue and it is encouraging to see so many newcomers to the stadium enjoy the facilities over the two days.

"We are proud of our blossoming relationship with RFL and our partners, EventScotland, VisitScotland and City of Edinburgh Council we look forward to building upon this year's success when the event takes place here in 2010."

It is estimated that one in 10 Magic Weekend attendees were from Scotland, a figure that the RFL's Nigel Wood believes shows there is a real appetite north of the border for Rugby League.

Wood said: "Scotland's performance in last year's World Cup did a lot to raise awareness of Rugby League in this country and the fact that more than 6,000 Scots have attended this event will add to the momentum.

"The media coverage in Scotland covering the Magic Weekend has been excellent and we are expanding our development team up here to turn the increased interest in the sport into more participants. And, who knows in years to come we may see a Scottish team playing in the Championship or Super League as a result of what we've started this year?"

Top class Rugby League will return to Scotland this autumn when Steve McCormack's side compete in the European Cup featuring six nations - Ireland, Lebanon, Russia, Scotland, Serbia and Wales.

This was a terrific weekend The rugby was a bit of a curate's egg but the fans and the atmosphere was superb.
I would recomend tho' that the fixture be moved to the later may bank holiday to give the west stand a chance to warm up, it was freezing in there. It would also help in moving away from a date when there are already so many other activities not least many end of season amature RL games especially in the younger age groups,
