Wellens is known for his dependability and his all round game. A product of the Saints academy, Wellens made his début for Saints in 1999 and soon established himself as the Saints number 1, as well as challenging Kris Radlinski of Wigan as the best full back in Britain. Wellens is now considered to be one of the best full backs in the world and has called the Great Britain number 1 jersey his own for a number of years.

The 2006 man of steel has been named in the super league dream team for the past 3 years and will look to add another year to that in 2008. A total of 16 caps for GB and 13 for England, Wellens will be almost certain of a seat on the plane to the world cup at the end of the year.
