Wigan let Long slip through their fingers and after a move to Widnes, Long was picked up by the Saints in 1997 as a replacement for the retiring Bobby Goulding. He soon established himself as a leading scrum half in Super League.
Long never really cemented his place in the GB starting 13 and after a very eventful 2006 tri-nations series in 2006, Long left the tour early and eventually announced his retirement from international rugby, stating that he wanted to concentrate on his club rugby. Wigan born Long has always expressed his desire to play in the NRL and despite being linked with Cronulla, this move has yet to go through and Long will start an 11th season with Saints following his testimonial season of 2007
